Trial Team jokes around in recess, where the judge dismissed both teams as Prosecution (Lebanon’s team) completed their witness list. Going through a week of preparation and a stressful 2 hour trial, its necessary to know when to let loose and when to act in a professional manner. During recess, both teams are able to take a break and reconvene later.

Braxton Myers (standing) is examining a witness that the Prosecution called, which is direct examination. Direct Examination is an important part of creating a story and presenting the facts of the case. Typically, the story of the case is presented in the Opening Statement, which Hayden Patton (right on table) did. Though, like an essay or paper, you propose the facts of the case in the examination of witnesses and use of evidence. This current witness, Brayden Rodden, was on scene for the CSI mock trial portion of the competition.

Jean Valentine, prosecutor largely in charge of evidence introduction, presents evidence to the defense before putting it in as official evidence. In a normal trial, she wouldn’t do this because it would’ve already given to them before the trial (which is called Discovery). What had happened was there was a mix up between the coaches that give evidence and it was not presented to the other team. This is a prime example of how teams have to adapt quickly to the new problems that arise in a trial.

Ahmad Culp does a direct examination, in which he has to question Tanner Roy about being a police officer on the scene. Officer Roy has been an extremely valuable witness to get what the narrative the prosecution wants to present to the jury. Since the officer was from our team, we could brief him before the stand about what we would ask about. Tanner gave damning testimony to what he heard from interviewing the witnesses on the scene.

Evidence collection is vital to get the verdict that you want. This put a heavy weight on Lebanon’s CSI team to gather as much evidence as they could, and as best as they could. In this specific instance, the vape box pictured was important to prove that the vape was at least in the car and open. From this, the prosecution used this as a launching pad to prove that the driver was impaired vision from the smoke and ran over a pedestrian.
